Choosing a new bike is never easy…the ISAAC KELVIN
I had an very open mind towards the current offers manufacturers procure these days but nevertheless I wanted to jump on the CARBN train…
Because a lot a manufacturers offer carbon frames this choise did not limit my view, so I went to Bikemotion / Utrecht at the end of 2004.
This is where I met my new compaignion.
Because Principia was on my list, I stopped at the department of PEZA Trading and looked at some of Principia Finest but my right eye caught a glimps of some wonderfull carbon ISAAC racers.
I’d read a test of the Isaac Force in the famous dutch magazine “Fiets”. They were undoubtely positive but the price tag of 2000euro was way above my possibilities.
So I took a closer look and discovered another model in my price-range…the ISAAC KELVIN.
Although ISAAC did not have any reference in the professionel cycling world, the stiffnes results and the succesfully passed EFBe fatigue test of 1300 N quickly convinced me…
Ordering and delivery went quite smootly and at the beginning of 2005 I took my first ride !
Visual check : love at first sight
What impressed me the most while visually checking the frame was the overall high level of quality and finish. The paintjob is good, the monocoque frame is very smooth and well made.
Altough it’s a personal opinion, the very oversized tubing is overwelmingly beautifull. The frame is delivered with a very nice 27.2mm seatpost and seatcollar, the FSA orbit carbon aheadset is already fixed and the dual diameter fork realy is … a beauty.
There is a very thiny hole in the bracket in order to mount the frontderailleur cable. The rear fork ends are not screwed but nicely ‘glued’ into the alu forkpads. There is a replacable rearderailleur hanger and the end of the seattube is specially designed for carbon seatposts (2 small openings to devide the pressure)
The frame is delivered with all necessary information considering assembly, usage and maintenance…
Next step : the first litlle testdrive
This bike is so beautifull, I hardly dared to test the bike in these winter conditions. But a nice sunshine convinced me so I rode my first km’s.
Already in the first meters I discovered that this is a very lightweight bike. A very strange feeling went through my body as if there was no bike between my legs! I did some accelarations and that proved my point…very lightweight indeed.
Third step: the long rides
It was time to test the bike toroughly. I did some 3 and 4 hour trips and even some ‘faked’ competition and high-speed group training.
Coming from a 58 cm (center-center) Alu-bike I had to adopt my driver-style. The Isaac Kelvin 57cm is much more nerveus but that is what you expect of a frame like this.
It turns very easy and reacts directly to any obstacle you try to avoid.
Accellaration is spectacular and easy, this bike responds without energyloss to any incentive you give…but is never unstable, even not in curvy downhills.
To check the stifness of the headtube and bottom bracket I mounted my very strong and stiff handmade wheelset. These wheels do not bend at all so this should be the ultimate test! And YES…during some sprints on bridges and slopes I had no feeling of powerloss, on the contrairy, the bike did accellerate even harder with these wheels.
Scientificly speaking this should result in lack of comfort. So I rode a couple of km’s on paved roads but the bikes “filters” the vibrations like no other. It’s always smooth and comfortable but never loses it’s rigidity. As if it absorbs all the bumps but transmits all power to the road… It must be a caracteristic of the carbon material ?
Of all the six bikes I’ve ever ridden, this is by far the best one …and the most beautifull without doubt.
This must be, by far, one of the best price/quality frames on the market.

1. Wat heeft dit met Ridley te maken?
